Why I still love helping people

Earlier in the year when I was honoured to receive the Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for the mortgage industry, I spent a bit of time reflecting on the journey.
This industry has given me so much over the years - lifelong friendships, incredible clients, and the opportunity to help thousands of New Zealanders into homes, investment properties, and financial positions they once thought were impossible.
What meant the most to me about the award wasn’t really the title itself. It was knowing the industry recognised the years spent mentoring, coaching, and helping shape many of the advisers and lenders who are now among the best in the country.
I still genuinely enjoy coaching our own team today. Lending changes constantly, as do the Banks, the rules and the regulations. Experience matters. Understanding policy is one thing - understanding people is another thing entirely.
That’s where I believe we’ve always been different from others.
At TMX, we don’t just look at what the computer or the data says. We look at the story behind the application. We understand structure, servicing, cashflow, and how to present an application properly to lenders.
And most importantly, we have access to more than 30 major lenders.
That matters more than you may realise because banks can only offer their own products. We can compare options across the market and often find solutions where many New Zealanders have already been given a “no”.
In fact, some of our favourite outcomes are helping our clients turn a previous decline from a Bank into an excited approval from one of the lenders we have always had strong relationships with.
Whether it’s a first home buyer trying to get on the ladder, an investor building a portfolio, or a family wanting a better structure for their mortgage, the right advice always makes a huge difference.
The reality is that pre-approval today is about far more than simply ticking boxes. It’s about strategy, timing, and knowing which lender best suits your situation.
After all these years, I still enjoy sitting down with clients and helping make the numbers work.
